The Sally Cats

CD Launch: On the Prowl

The Sally Cats are preparing for the February 19 launch of their second CD, On The Prowl, at Center Stage Theater. While their first album focused on the great classics of big band jazz, their upcoming opus pushes their envelope right out the window with a mix of genres all on one album. Recorded with engineer Emmet Sargeant in three days at Playback Recording Studios and mastered at Beagle Studios in Santa Barbara, the album features jazz favorites as well as classic rock ’n’ roll and pop music.

“We're very excited about this new project,” says singer and producer Sally Barr. “We've made some pretty unique arrangements of these great tunes, and came by them quite organically. Each member gave equal input to the final product and I just couldn't be more proud of the result.”

Where as the ensemble on the Sally Cats’ first album had twelve musicians including a full string section, and special guests trumpeter Nate Birkey and violinist Gilles Apap on the roster, this new album has been stripped down the bare quintet with just one very special guest, Madalena, (trombone) on “Lullaby of the Leaves” and “These Boots are Made for Walking.”

“We really wanted to keep it simple, get down to the core of it. And because of that, we were able to take the music to a place I don’t think we were expecting to go. This approach has opened us to new possibilities, and I can’t wait to see where we go next!”

The Sally Cats’ first CD, Wonderful Day, debuted to great acclaim. Leslie Connors of Jazz Times named the work “a dazzler,” and Barr’s voice “stunningly beautiful.” Robert Sutton of Jazz Corner called the band “top-drawer veteran players” who “continually strut their brilliance.”

Drama Dogs presents

Circle Mirror Transformation

An absorbing, unblinking and sharply funny play which traces the lives of a handful of small-town Vermont residents who gather each week for an acting class taught at the local community center. By the play's end we seem to see the very bottom of these souls and feel how the acting class has shaped their lives in substantial ways.

Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declared the Obie Award winning play, “Circle Mirror Transformation,”  as “the kind of unheralded gem that sends people into the streets babbling and bright-eyed with the desire to spread the word.”

“My favorite literary event in town, hands down, is Speaking of Stories. There is a real thrill in sitting in a darkened theater and hearing inspired actors perform short stories. What does it make me think of? My mother. My mother reading aloud to me and doing all the voices. This is one of our great local institutions.”

Dijo Productions presents

Freud’s Last Session

Ed Giron as Freud
Justin Stark as C.S. Lewis
Directed by Jerry Oshinsky

At the start of World War II, renowned atheist psychoanalyst Freud invites religious scholar and author C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) for a visit. From the start, the two analyze, debate, confront and confound each other about religion, sex, life and death. It's a witty, funny, and poignant encounter between the foremost intellectuals of their day.

Giron and Stark are reunited after appearing in Frost/Nixon, and following the successful run of this production earlier this year. This critically and audience acclaimed production will have only eight performances in Santa Barbara.

This production follows other highly acclaimed productions in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

You'll laugh, think, and engage as Freud's Last Session unfolds.

Don't miss this engagement. It's cheaper than therapy, and well worth analyzing.

Dijo Productions presents

The Vagina Monologues

The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler features three actresses portraying the private and emotional experiences of intriguing women, including one who has not been “down there” since 1953, a vagina workshop participant, a Bosnian rape survivor, a woman whose goal was to make vaginas happy, and a grandmother who was there in the room when her granddaughter was born.

The play has been widely acclaimed for its frank and touching revelations, which often come as a surprise as the audience witnesses the evolution of each very special personality.

Ivy Vahanian, Carol Metcalf and Maia Mook are delighted to be reunited in this very intimate production. Each performed in a production last year of The Vagina Monologues, but this time take on some different and challenging roles. Director Jerry Oshinsky says that he treasures that he is able to work again with these three brilliant actresses.

Josie Hyde Presents

Wind in a Mirror...
Ayahuasca Visions

A multimedia solo show by Josie Hyde
Music by Tom Lackner
Video by Rani DeMuth and Josie Hyde

Strictly speaking, that body asleep in your bed is kin to your corpse.
Occupant elsewhere.  Every night we disappear.
Without this little dab of perspective, we’d go mad!

Wind in a Mirror...Ayahuasca Visions is a boldly original multimedia solo show, a play of ironies about death, guilt and transcendence. The story is a search for enlightenment climaxing in the Amazon in a ceremony with Ayahuasca, the visionary Vine of Death.  Spoken word and song are accompanied by a surreal art video with music by Tom Lackner and Amazon shamans Don Agustin Rivas Vasquez and Don Jose Campos.  Josie has received standing ovations and sold-out shows at The Marsh Theater in San Francisco as well as Center Stage Theater this past December.

“Riveting, still speechless the next day!”  —Klein Films
“Magical!”  —Casa Magazine
“A female Spalding Gray!” —The Independent

Spalding Gray was in fact Josie’s good friend and inspirer.

Josie Hyde has performed her poetry in festivals and clubs in North America, Central America and Europe and won poetry slams in San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Chicago, New York, Costa Rica and Berlin.  Twice she received The Honor Award for Lyrics in The Great American Song Contest.  Tom Lackner composes and produces in his studio The Tompound in Santa Barbara, and tours as the percussionist with actor Jeff Bridges’ band The Abiders. Rani DeMuth has screened her films at over sixty international film festivals, winning awards in every category of filmmaking. Her short film The Double starring Eric Roberts received the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's first Art of Film Award.

“In this excellent new Lit Moon production of the play, the broadest implications of Prospero’s path from revenge to redemption are explored with wit and grace, melding respect for the Shakespearean text with an artist’s eye for theater as image and a choreographer’s feeling for the physical properties of bodies in motion.”
—Charles Donelan, Santa Barbara Independent

“Truly artful.”

DramaDogs Presents

Defying Gravity

by Jane Anderson

DramaDogs proudly presents award-winning writer and director Jane Anderson’s Defying Gravity, a clever and uplifting one-act fantasy play about space travel, spirituality and the Challenger disaster for one weekend only. According to the N.Y. Daily News, Defying Gravity.... “floats gracefully in the big blue yonder of the imagination .”

This freely structured look at the 1986 Challenger disaster artfully interweaves the past with the present and the lives of participants and bystanders, drawing parallels among painter Claude Monet's artistic quest, the zest of the teacher selected to the first civilian astronaut, the perspectives of her grieving daughter, the aspirations of elderly tourists who drive their Winnebago to Florida to watch the space shot and dream of hotels in space, the guilt felt by a NASA mechanic and his girlfriend's fear of heights.

Additionally there will be one “pay what you can” performance Sunday October 6 at 2:00 P.M. These special tickets will only be sold at the door or on the phone (no online sales) – suggested minimum $5. Cash or check preferred.

Speaking of stories Presents

The Things They Carried . . .

The Redemptive Power of Storytelling

Stories from military men and women

In conjunction with the Santa Barbara Library Big Read we present a performance of stories by and about those who have served including selections from The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, Generation Kill by Evan Wright, and stories by Siobhan Fallon and Santa Barbara's own Raymond Morua. This will not be an examination of the subject of war or the politics of war, but instead an exploration and celebration of the people who serve and the stories they bring back with them. Stories of bravery, camaraderie, life-altering trials and the incredible resiliency of the human spirit. Stories will be performed by Irwin Appel, Dan Gunther, Anne Guynn, and Fernando James Saldana Jr.

Sponsored by The Santa Barbara Library System and the NEA The Big Read. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.
