Personal Stories - RETURN TO LIVE

Call For Submissions
Live Performances at Center Stage

Center Stage Theater is seeking submissions for our November Personal Stories - RETURN TO LIVE! performance.  These are original spoken word pieces performances by their authors, they can include poetry, short stories, monologues, etc.

The performed pieces should be 5-10 minutes in length. The last 18 months have been a tough ride for everyone so for this performance we are concentrating on positive, upbeat, humorous, inspiring, fun and hopeful pieces.  We are looking for a diverse collection of pieces and performers – everyone is welcome - all ages, backgrounds and communities. We hope to welcome new faces along with welcoming many familiar faces back to the stage.

The selection of pieces for the performances will be a 2-phase process. Artistic Director, Maggie Mixsell, will review the submissions and select those that she feels will best translate to the stage. This group will then be invited to audition. From the auditions she will select the final pieces/authors for the show and they will receive one-on-one coaching and direction in preparation for the final performances. Maggie will work with the authors to determine the style of performance that best suits each selection. Everyone is welcome to submit, and you can submit multiple stories.  Past Personal Stories productions have included an eclectic group that included professional actors who were making their first attempt at writing, published writers who were performing their works for the first time and pretty much everything else in between.

COVID Protocols: In the interest of everyone’s comfort and safety we are asking that all participants in the final performance be vaccinated, or provide proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours of any time they come to the theater. It is hard to predict what the next two months will bring in terms of the impact of COVID on this process.  What I can do is tell you what the process will be if it happened today. For rehearsals and performances everyone would be masked at all time, except performers while they are actually rehearsing or performing. Audiences will be required to wear masks. If things change in the area we will also change, and I will keep everyone updated throughout the process.
Submission process:

Please submit your piece in both text and video.  The text version should be a Word Document or PDF, 500-1500 words. For the video the story should be 5 to 10 minutes when read aloud. This does not have to be a fancy video, a simple recording on your phone is fine. If you have trouble creating a video let us know and we can schedule a zoom meeting with you to record it.
Approximately 20 pieces will be selected, and those stories will be divided into 2 bills and each bill will perform twice.
