Jazz at Center Stage – June 2024

June 27, 2024

Center Stage Theater’s amazing jazz concert series continues as we present the incredible talents of Téka on Thursday, June 27th. The warmth and beauty of the tropics are vividly embodied by Téka, a renowned Brazilian vocalist/guitarist. Featuring beautifully seductive melodies and infectious rhythms, Téka sings with a sensual lyricism, rich, velvety tone, and perfectly swung grooves from her extensive repertoire. Joining Téka for this summertime concert are saxophonist Robert Kyle (Tony Guerrero Quintet, Betty Bryant, Billy Mitchell) and Alyse Korn on the piano (John Stephens, Dr. Jimmy McConnell, Joe Vento). Santino Tafarella on bass, (Bob Mintzer Big Band, Bruce Forman) and percussionist Kevin Winard (Steve Tyrell, Kristin Chenoweth, Doc Severinsen).

About Téka

A native of Sao Paulo, Téka mastered the traditions of Brazilian music at an early age. Along the way, she became equally entranced by American jazz. As her artistry grew, her talented singing and guitar playing fused the sensual rhythms and harmonies of Brazil with the sophistication and improvisation of jazz – a fascinating musical blend she calls New Bossa. Téka has performed and recorded with Brazilian legends Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil, Flora Purim, and Airto Moreira. Her first CD, Garden Planet, included original music with an environmental theme. Both Garden Planet and her second release, Watercolours of Brazil, received high praise from critics and audiences.
