Talley’s Folly opens on Broadway in March or April of 2011 and we feel fortunate to have our production open locally just ahead of the Broadway production. A lot of people will not have the chance to see the New York production of this wonderful play, but they can see ours here at Center Stage Theater.

Talley’s Folly is the story of two totally opposite people--one a Southern girl and the other a Jewish immigrant--who find an attraction to each other they cannot deny. Set in 1944, the play reflects on both the prejudices of society and the back and forth dance between the two characters who are drawn to each other but resist. A comedy, a drama, a romance, Talley’s Folly’s complexity of characterization but simplicity of storytelling clearly demonstrates why it is a Pulitzer Prize-winning achievement.

Director Bill Waxman, who has experience as actor/director/playwright was most recently seen in Santa Barbara in Inherit the Wind, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, and Twelve Angry Men. Says Waxman, “This is a complex work that the playwright makes look very easy, and therein lies its brilliance.”

Ed Giron is featured as Matt, the immigrant who is drawn to the Southern girl despite cultural and age differences. Mr. Giron just finished a successful run as Nixon in Frost/Nixon and comments, “This is a much lighter role, Matt is actually very funny, but this play has so many levels on which the characters play, it’s a challenge. The other key role besides Matt and Sally is really chemistry—the chemistry between Matt and Sally that pulls them together despite any effort on their parts to the contrary. The part of Sally is amazing and she is the real star of the show.”

Maia Mook, who portrays Sally, has performed in Santa Barbara for the SB Civic Light Opera, at the Garvin Theater, and for Dijo Productions. Maia was most recently seen in Santa Barbara in Inherit the Wind at Center Stage. "This is a play that works on many levels, showing how opposites really do attract. It’s a magical, delightful, funny and very real story.”

The show will perform without an intermission and that there is ABSOLUTELY NO LATE SEATING, so please arrive promptly.
