THE CANARY OF WILD IRISH WOMEN

A Dramatic Reading

Four women are being held, not as prisoners but as internees, which means they can be held indefinitely "at the Crown's Pleasure." They have been taken out of their homes in Ireland without being able to make any contact with or provisions for their loved ones. Because of ill health, they are housed in the infirmary. They are allowed a canary thanks to the kindness of an English doctor. The canary becomes the symbol of imprisonment for all the characters. The doctor, the matron, the jail attendant, an Irish M.P. and the women are all changed forever by this experience. The four Irish women stick together despite their different backgrounds and are bound to loyalty, courage, laughter and common goal.

Renowned local artist Christina Clancy Allison wrote this new Irish two-act play, which is directed by Maggie Mixsell (of Speaking of Stories) and performed by a cast of eight equity actors, including Christina. The play, inspired by true events in 20th Century British history, is engaging, compelling, and powerful. The cast is superb.
