The Sally Cats - CD Launch: On the Prowl

The Sally Cats are preparing for the February 19 launch of their second CD, On The Prowl, at Center Stage Theater. While their first album focused on the great classics of big band jazz, their upcoming opus pushes their envelope right out the window with a mix of genres all on one album. Recorded with engineer Emmet Sargeant in three days at Playback Recording Studios and mastered at Beagle Studios in Santa Barbara, the album features jazz favorites as well as classic rock ’n’ roll and pop music.

“We're very excited about this new project,” says singer and producer Sally Barr. “We've made some pretty unique arrangements of these great tunes, and came by them quite organically. Each member gave equal input to the final product and I just couldn't be more proud of the result.”

Where as the ensemble on the Sally Cats’ first album had twelve musicians including a full string section, and special guests trumpeter Nate Birkey and violinist Gilles Apap on the roster, this new album has been stripped down the bare quintet with just one very special guest, Madalena, (trombone) on “Lullaby of the Leaves” and “These Boots are Made for Walking.”

“We really wanted to keep it simple, get down to the core of it. And because of that, we were able to take the music to a place I don’t think we were expecting to go. This approach has opened us to new possibilities, and I can’t wait to see where we go next!”

The Sally Cats’ first CD, Wonderful Day, debuted to great acclaim. Leslie Connors of Jazz Times named the work “a dazzler,” and Barr’s voice “stunningly beautiful.” Robert Sutton of Jazz Corner called the band “top-drawer veteran players” who “continually strut their brilliance.”
