The Wheel

Directed by Amy Love
Assistant Directed by Heather Harkness

An original work developed in rehearsal by Lights Up! actors and scripted by Amy Love.

May 18 - May 19, 2023

The Wheel is an original work developed collaboratively by Lights Up! actors and directors. At the outset of rehearsals, we set a theme and basic story arc and then improvised and developed characters who would tell the story. The Wheel is the tale of a small-town legend - the story of an eccentric family and a mysterious disappearance that, over four generations, is shaped by rumor, misunderstanding, and heartbreak. When the descendants of the family gather 100 years after the disappearance, truths are revealed that heal generations-old wounds.

The process of developing The Wheel has been a true joy; it has been delightful to weave the flow of ideas from so many creative minds into a many-faceted story. I wanted to work in this way to allow actors to develop their own characters- perhaps one they’ve always wanted to play or that might hold special meaning for them. In the process, the actors were also able to experience a type of playwright's “writer’s room” as they learned about the process of developing a story, theme, and characters that all contribute to the message of a play. The actor’s creative energy in the rehearsal room has been inspiring, and I’m so proud of their eagerness to fearlessly explore this uncharted territory.

Thank you to everyone in the community who supported us through this prolonged intermission. We would not still be here without your support.
