Chain Reaction Theatre and Michael Keith Morgan presents

9 Parts of Desire

By Heather Raffo

Performed by Elizabeth Huffman

This event has been sponsored in part by the Santa Barbara Independent, the Hull Foundation & UCSB Department of Feminist Studies, the Mellinchamp Fund & UCSB Department of Religious Studies, and the UCSB Department of Theatre and Dance.

You will not want to miss this explosive and award-winning show coming to Santa Barbara for one night only!

Heather Raffo’s one-woman play goes under the veil to bring us 9 stunning portraits of the extraordinary (and ordinary) lives of a whole cross-section of Iraqi women: a sexy painter, a radical whiskey-swilling Communist, a doctor, an Arab American, a young girl, wives and lovers. This work delves into the many conflicting aspects of what it means to be a woman in the age-old war zone that is Iraq.

Nine Parts of Desire is an unusually timely meditation on the ancient, the modern and the feminine in a country overshadowed by war.

Ms. Huffman, who currently lives and works as Artistic Director of Chain Reaction Theatre in Portland, Oregon, has performed Ms. Raffo’s powerful one-woman play to sold-out houses from North Carolina to the Theatertage Festival in Hanau, Germany.

Please join Elizabeth & special guests Dr. Janet Afary, Dr. Christine Mc Mahon, and Nancy Gallagher after the play for an informative talkback. Panel moderated by Michael Keith Morgan.

Elizabeth Huffman is charismatic enough to fully hold one’s attention through the strenuous 90-minute tour de force of monologues from the nine characters, achieving a distinct voice for each, and — beyond the rage and sorrow — she catches both the gossipy tone and the magisterial poetics of the writing
