When the Bough Breaks

The Clown Muses of a bygone era appear in Santa Barbara. With shadowy humor they set about their mission to transport the audience into a world of powerful storytelling, expressed through theater, poetry, movement, and music.“When the Bough Breaks is an intense exploration of what it means to be part of a family and the challenges teens face in the struggle to belong. Created by teens in the City at Peace - Santa Barbara program, these personal sketches paint a perilous collage of their lives, hopes and dreams for the future. Featuring original music and poetry, When the Bough Breaks promises to be a show that will open up your heart and mind.

Entirely written and performed by a diverse group of local teens from several area high schools and junior highs, When the Bough Breaks is directed by Joseph Velasco and Assistant Director Jessica Papp and is produced by Karena Jew and City at Peace – Santa Barbara. The show’s Musical Director is John Douglas, assisted by student lyricists and musicians. Also working on this year’s production are Sojourner Kincaid-Rolle, Chris Turner, Matt Tavianini, and Shannon Abero, together with many program volunteers.

City at Peace has been empowering teenagers to create safe, healthy, and peaceful lives and communities for 16 years. Using the performing arts as a vehicle, City at Peace teens offer a true-to-life glimpse into the lives of teens and the issues they face growing up in Santa Barbara.

Every year, audience members exclaim, “If you’re a parent, you must see this show!”
